Love. Serve. Summer Edition. One group wrote encouraging notes to HRBC youth who will travel to Alpine Adventures next week. They also delivered a prayer shawl and participated in a sing-along at Morningside. The second group spent some time with another local mission partner at the African Christian Community Church. Everyone returned tired but grateful for a good day of ministry in our community.

So how is this ministry impacting those who are participating? Here’s a recent challenge from Wilton Johns to his Sunday School Class after his experience last week: “This morning I am tired, but happy. I spent last night with four wonderful ladies at BLS SE. The five of us, none of whom I can ever remember talking with, took a trip over to a group home for mentally disabled adults to share dessert and play Bingo. The residents had a great time and were excited and appreciative of our visit, but I think mostly appreciative of our time. The Bingo was fun, the dessert was great, the experience was awesome. We, the five from HRBC, were blessed by giving of our time and ourselves JUST BECAUSE (oh, and also because that is what we are called to do). I was blessed by spending time with four members of the Healing Hearts group that chose to get out of their comfort zone. Now, this part is a challenge...look at the rest of the Be Love Serve opportunities for the summer. Come get involved DOING something in our community. I would have loved to have some young people...children...or teens...or twenties...or thirties with me to share the time. Folks, this is an opportunity to get out and show God's love. Look into it. Maybe I will see you there.”

"We are currently searching to fill two initial construction teams to serve in Haiti. Here are the details for these two teams as we have them now. Other teams with other partners will be coming as the week’s progress.

Current work is some demolition and brick work. We will also attempt to send a medical team at the same time. Work is strenuous.

Volunteers must be in great health. Air is not great with a lot of dust. Immunizations are highly recommended. (Tetanus, Hep A & B, typhoid, H1N1, anti-malarial)

Sleeping is in tents. Three simple meals per day with a power bar or something similar for breaks. Clean water and electricity 24/7.

Working in partnership with the American Baptist Churches and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.

Cost is approximately $900 (airfare + hotel in Miami) + $300 (in country costs) + $27 exit fee = $1,227

Team 1 (10 participants) – Depart April 30 (overnight in Miami). Arrive in Haiti May 1 and return May 8.

Hurricanes, earthquakes, fire, floods, whatever the disaster, it arrives unexpectedly and with very little preparation time. Virginia Baptists are involved in disaster relief to help in these times of need. Every spring, training is offered in several locations around Virginia to help us prepare to meet these needs. On May 15 at HRBC, training will be offered in:

*Feeding Unit (preparing and serving meals at the disaster site)

* Recovery (clean up of all types, mud, trees and brush)

*Temporary Child Care (minimum age 18 years and background check required)
We are never too old to play with a child or rock a baby.

The cost of the training is $15.00 which includes all printed materials, an official disaster relief hat, t-shirt, and badge as well as lunch. The schedule for the day is as follows:

9am-10am: Registration
10am-Noon: Introduction to VA Baptist Disaster Relief
12pm-1pm: Lunch
1pm-3:30pm: Breakout Sessions (participants select one breakout session)

You may register through the church office or by contacting Jeannette Hildebrand (Jeannette.hildebrand@vbmb.org or 804.915.5000) at the Virginia Baptist Resource Center. Exterior siding is now finished thanks to the expertise of team Gibson climbing the ladders. Steve & Laura provided the knowledge to make the perfect angled cuts while toting and fetching the needed tools for the ladder dwellers. It didn't take this group long to function like a well-oiled machine.
While things were running smooth on the outside, Debbie & Julie found themselves working with drywall mud, caulking guns and tile grout. Seems they were always mixing, squirting and spreading something. Needless to say the fingernails will never be the same.
Alan proved his detective skills! For most of Saturday we saw just the bottoms of his shoes hanging out of the attic while he hunted for a missing wire to the bathroom light. By the end of the weekend, he solved electrical mysteries, installed fixtures & fans and completed all electric projects on the list.

The tasks for the three days include:

painting two rooms

removing very old hardware and installing new door knobs

unpacking and organizing a LOT of donated children's books

organizing, rewiring, and revamping the computer lab

installing a water cooler

removing several unwanted pieces of furniture from the site

Virginia Baptists will join with Richmond-area Methodists to package 142,000 meals on April 6 and 7, through Stop Hunger Now (SHN). SHN is the organization that Virginia Baptists have partnered with on many occasions, including our recent annual meeting in November. They have a reliable partner on the ground in Haiti and have sent over 6 million meals there over the past several years.

Virginia Baptists have been asked to provide 40 – 50 volunteers for each of the packaging time periods. All volunteers must register in advance for a scheduled time period. You may do so by emailing Jeannette Hildebrand or by calling 800.255.2428, ext. 7260.

Listed below are many of our ministry partners who are at work caring for the people of Haiti in the name of Jesus Christ.

Cooperative Baptist Fellowship Response - How You Can Help

In the aftermath of the devastating 7.0 earthquake in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship has launched its response, which will be largely coordinated through CBF field personnel Nancy and Steve James, who serve in the country and are traveling to Port-au-Prince to assess how CBF can respond.

Both medical professionals, the Jameses are bringing emergency medical supplies with them and plan to establish a staging area from which the Fellowship’s response will be channeled. Daniel Vestal, CBF Coordinator, encourages individuals to respond in four ways where you can help:

• First you can pray: Prayer requests will be updated regularly. CBF is updating prayer requests from Haiti at: http://www.thefellowship.info/Pray

• Second you can give: Your gift will go to earthquake relief. Give to CBF online at http://www.thefellowship.info. You can also give through HRBC, and we will send along your offering directly to the disaster relief efforts of both the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and the International Mission Board unless otherwise directed.

• Third, you can get involved: If you want to help directly with response efforts, please let CBF know your skills and experience. CBF is building a disaster response team and an application is available at http://www.thefellowship.info/Disaster-Response-Application

• Fourth, you can stay connected: Read the latest news release, updates on the CBF blog, and connect through CBF's Haiti ministry network's Ning site: http://fellowshipportal.ning.com/group/haitipartnersforchrist.

You can also click here to view CBF Coordinator, Daniel Vestal's, message about the crisis in Haiti.

International Mission Board Response - How You Can Help

The International Mission Board is also very involved in the disaster relief efforts in Haiti. You can follow the IMB link to see and read more about the IMB's response and ways you can personally be involved: www.imb.org

As Southern Baptist disaster relief officials were heading to Haiti Jan. 19 to assess needs, IMB missionaries in neighboring Dominican Republic were providing immediate relief supplies, medical aid and spiritual counseling to survivors of the earthquake that rocked Haiti the week before. “We have asked almost all of our IMB missionaries in the Dominican Republic to set the majority of their other work aside and focus on the Haiti response,” said Adam Hammond, the IMB’s strategy leader for Central America and the Caribbean.

A few dozen families from Shiloh Baptist Church in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, are living under a tarp attached to what’s left of their church building. They lost their pastor and three other leaders in the Jan. 12 earthquake. Out of 2,000 members, they can account for only about 100 so far. “We don’t know where our future leaders will come from,” said one member. But those gathered under the tarp are holding services every day.

Financial contributions for the Haiti relief efforts can be sent through the IMB’s Haiti Response Fund or through gobgr.org. As mentioned above, all contributions to HRBC will divide evenly between CBF and IMB.

Contributions to the IMB will go 100 percent toward relief efforts. Baptist Global Response (BGR) is a Southern Baptist relief and development organization working with other Southern Baptist entities to coordinate disaster relief efforts.

Thanks to the individuals and Sunday School classes who stepped up to meet tangible needs for our brothers and sisters in Haiti. Thanks also to our children and families for offering their day off from school to assemble these items and forward them to their destination. Click here to view the pictures from the day.

We continue to pray now for God to use and multiply these supplies to provide the care needed in this devastated community.

Launched in 2001, Together for Hope (TFH) is a long-term commitment to working with people in 20 of the nation's poorest counties in order to affect change and break the cycle of economic disparity. The ministry is about establishing long-term relationship, listening, learning and walking alongside local leaders. The hope is that communities will be transformed as will the churches and individuals who serve in focal counties.

Mid-November a team of 4 left HRBC on a 3 day journey to explore the possibility of joining CBF in Owsley County. It was 3 days filled with enlightenment, discovery and adventure as the team met pastors, community leaders and neighbors. People wanted to talk about their friends and families. They were excited to meet new friends. These Appalachian foothills are astoundingly beautiful. However, the poverty and need is overwhelming.

The team learned that becoming a Together For Hope parnter would find us working closely with First Baptist Church Frankfort, KY. They are excited about the possibility of having a new mission partner in Kentucky. It is easy to see that God is ready to do some big things in Owsley County. The people of that small community are ready for the challenge. They want their families and children to flourish, and have a bright future. The are ready to work towards that goal.

Opportunities for ministry are endless...... food pantry, clothes closet, community parties/festivals, VBS, Bible clubs, Bible studies, construction, education enrichment classes of all kinds, senior adult activities, sports camps, music camps and more!! If you can imagine it, the folks in Owsley County are ready to participate!

In Matthew 19, Jesus tells his disciples ....... "with God all things are possible". The same is true for Owsley County, Kentucky. We can't "fix" anything on our own. But with God working through us, we can share His love with one person at a time. Changing a heart can indeed change a life, which in turn changes a whole community.

Continue to pray for discernment and guidance for the Ends of Earth Team. Watch for more information about Owsley County, Kentucky in the coming months. The EoE team is learning all they can in order to share it all with you as soon as possible.

Take a look at the photos & videos from the exploration trip to Owsley County.

Update Team #7

It was a small team. But they sure got a lot done!!

Laura & Julie headed to Charlotte with ceramic tile on their mind and loaded in the car. After a slow start, the project started moving quickly. Julie was shouting out tile measurements and Laura was cutting as fast as the saw would go! Laura was very thankful for the small heater, as the rented tile saw "threw" water at her with every cut!

The next crew will get to grout the bathroom, install exterior siding, finish a few odds & ends and then start painting. You know the end is near when the paint brushes come out!!

(Note: Needs are placed in chronological order with the earlier deadlines at the beginning.)

Happy Holiday Giving!

1. Shoes For Uganda: Juma's Dream
HRBC is joining Mt. Pisgah and several other churches in the Midlothian area to support Juma Semakula's dream to send 30,000 pairs of shoes to his homeland of Uganda. Juma's love for his wife and two sons, and his passion for his country are evident in the Richmond Times Dispatch article about his dream to send the shoes. (Click here to read the article.) The request is for new or used shoes. Used shoes must be clean and in good condition.
The book "Four Feet, Two Sandals" by Karen Williams is a great story to share with your children while choosing which shoes you will give to help make Juma's dream come true. Imagine the excitement in Uganda when barefoot children, parents and friends come to church on Christmas day, and each are handed a new pair of shoes!!
*** The Door Man -- Every place needs a good one, and Wil rose to the occasion. When Don gave him the first job, Will thought it would be quick work to drill a few holes and apply the weather stripping. Two days later, Wil finished the door project. He learned that weather stripping required about 30 small holes. After that he attached the door sweeps ......... about 20 more holes! He then drilled the holes for the locking mechanism, then installed the threshold. All this was done with people walking through the door every few seconds! As you look at the photos, you will be able to sympathize with Wil!!
***Carrie was willing to do anything. Poor girl -- she got all the gross, dirty jobs! After measuring, cutting and installing the last pieces of insulation, she moved on to even dirtier things. Drywall mud! Carrie took on the fun task of taping and mudding the seams in the drywall. She was closed in a tiny bathroom, all alone, most of the day. But the rest of the team kept checking to make sure she wasn't napping.
*** Wilton and Caroline make a superb team, no matter what the task they're given. They demolished the old, plank siding on both sides of the clubhouse. We had to pull them off the ladders when it started to rain! Then they went inside and began to install light fixtures.
*** The rest of the team worked together to finish hanging wallboards, trim work, door installation (Chung would not rest until the bathroom door closed perfectly!), preparing for new exterior siding and throwing lots of things into the dumpster as we cleaned the work area.

Click here to see the photos.

Next steps to finish the clubhouse require ceramic tile, paint, electrical finish work and bathroom fixture installation. If any of these activities are on your list of skills, contact Julie Carr (beemeup@comcast.net) about going with the next teams.

Clubhouse Update Team #5

Brown boards, blue boards, door locks, attic stairs ......... Cross them all off the list!

Thanks to Don H, his resources and engineering skills, the main door can now be locked and secured. Sometimes what seems to be the smallest job turns out to be the biggest challenge. Wilton F and Don L continued hard work to finish interior walls, and preparing the bathroom for tile.

With the exception of one small wall, the interior is ready for a little drywall work, trim, paint and light/electrical fixtures. "What's up with one wall being unfinished?" you ask!! It's been decided that a utility sink would be a very valuable asset in a high-traffic, activity-driven, kid-friendly room! The plumber will be adding the plumbing lines this week to make that happen. When he's finished, up goes the last wall.

While they wrestled with insulation strips, Terry framed in and began to install the pull-down stairs. It never ceases to amaze us when we see how God is the author of "perfect timing". Just when Terry was contemplating how to measure, hold, drill and adjust ....... Raynard pops in to ask if he can help! Raynard has been a part of the Hyaets community since it began. He has made friends with several of our HRBC folks and is always helping with the children and work at the houses. It didn't take long for Raynard and Terry to finish the pull-down stairs.

The next two days consisted of more insulation, installing the ceiling, and getting up two walls. Of course, there were many fun challenges along the way, but by the end, the third wall was begun and ready for team 5 to pick up the next weekend! One of the fun parts of the experience was Friday afternoon when neighborhood kids popped in to investigate what we were doing. The comments ranged from, "I can't wait until it's a clubhouse!" to "Can you put a swimming pool and a slide in here too?" While our construction skills have significantly improved, we still can't accommodate all requests!

Check back for more updates next week! And don't forget...it's not too late for you to join the mission!

Older Adult Hyaets Mission

Now is the time to sign up for our annual November mission to the Hyaets community in Charlotte, North Carolina. Each year, we go and serve this community November 4-7. This year, we will again assist in making Christmas crafts for the children on Saturday, November 7. We will also host a community meal on Friday, November 6. The rest of the time will be spent doing household chores and spending time with the neighbors. We would love to have some handymen join us for help with some small projects around the house. The total cost of the trip is $85. Don't miss out on this time of putting our faith into action! Please make your $50 deposit by October 25. If you can place these in a blue envelope available through the church office with a new completed medical release form, that would help with the paperwork.

Hyaets Clubhouse Construction Continues ......

After a much needed summer break, we are ready to get started on the Hyaets Clubhouse Project. The clubhouse is over half-way finished, and it's time to git-er-done! You can be sure the Hyaets folks are ready to be able to use this wonderful facility that's soooooo close to being open.

We are planning to finish the project in October. The final steps include ceramic tile, caulking, drywall finish, electrical and installation of bathroom fixtures. If you are available to volunteer during any weekend in November, please contact Julie Carr. beemeup@comcast.net or 378-2133.

World Hunger Offering

On Sunday, October 11, our church will collect a love offering for World Hunger. Going away to college is a significant transition for college students. The goal of HRBC is to keep college students connected during the school year. We do so by asking the HRBC family to adopt college students. What is required to "adopt"? Those who participate in this ministry agree to the following: pray specifically for the student, send a note in the fall identifying yourself, stay in touch for special occasions like birthdays and holidays, periodically send an email of encouragement (especially at exam time), etc. That's all that is required. Addresses, birthdays and email addresses will be furnished. If you are interested in adopting a college student for this school year, please contact Nell Branton, Jerusalem Team Leader nhbranton2@verizon.net.

New 2010 Mission Opportunity

The members of the Ends of Earth Team ask you to continue to pray with us as God guides us into new mission opportunities over the coming months. Many locations and needs have been shared with our team. We are discerning those places where God has gifted HRBC to serve ....... those places where we can join God in His work

Even though God is closing doors in some places, we're excited that it appears He is paving the way in others. We are confident new journeys will begin in the near future. Be sure you clear you calendar for July 17-25, 2010. This date has been set aside for you and your family to participate in a new mission experience. Stay tuned in the coming months for more details.

Love Offering for Virginia Missions

We come to the conclusion of our Week of Prayer for State Missions today, and we ingather a love offering to support the work of Virginia Baptists. Our goal is $4,500. Please give generously!
